Description

Taiwan Agricultural Long Term Ecological Research Network aims to collect the occurrences of birds, amphibians and reptiles on the farmlands of Taiwan since 2021. We collected the observations at eight sites in different parts of Taiwan, and the crop types including rice paddies and orchards. All sites include at least a patch of fields with organic farming and conventional farming respectively. The surveyors recorded the date, time, location, and species of each individual which was observed by sight and/or sound.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 865 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

Project Data

Agricultural expansion is a major contributor to the loss of biodiversity. In recent years, there has been a push to establish biodiversity-friendly agriculture that takes into account multiple values, such as food production and conservation of biodiversity, in order to improve the agricultural environment. This is an important area of research for promoting new agricultural practices. Despite promoting citizen science in Taiwan for over a decade and accumulating a significant amount of data on the spatial and temporal distribution of organisms, there remains a considerable lack of data on the agricultural environment. In response, we have collaborated with the Agricultural Experimental Institute's long-term agricultural ecological monitoring plan. Since 2021, we have established eight monitoring stations across the country (Emei in Hsinchu, West Lake in Miaoli, Madou in Tainan, Yanchao in Kaohsiung, Fangshan in Pingtung, Beinan in Taitung, Chishang in Taitung, and Fuli in Hualien) to monitor birds, amphibians, and reptiles using the map drawing method. Each station's field area contains at least one conventional farming method and one organic farming method.

Sampling Methods

The sites were selected by the Agricultural Research Institute, Council of Agriculture. None were selected by random sampling.

Study Extent The locations of farmlands includes rice fields in Fuli Township, Hualien County and Chishang Township, Taitung County; pomelo orchards in Xihu Township, Miaoli County, and Madou District, Tainan City; Sakyamuni orchards in Beinan Township, Taitung County; jujube orchards in Yanchao District, Kaohsiung City; Citrus orchards in Emei Township, Hsinchu County; and mango orchards in Fangshan Township, Pingtung County.
Quality Control All data were double-checked by the surveyors and the project manager.

Method step description:

  1. Bird survey: Choose any 15-minute period between 15 minutes before sunrise and 1 hour before sunset (excluding the 11am-1pm period) to record the birds seen in the target agricultural area using the map drawing method. Survey dates should avoid bad weather such as rain and strong winds, and preferably be conducted on sunny days. The survey method adopts the "map drawing method," and the survey range is the target field area. Each bird survey lasts for 15 minutes, recording all the birds heard and seen, and marking their resting locations on the map.
  2. Amphibians and reptiles: Visual encounter surveys are conducted in combination with audio strip transects. A convenient and representative walking route (transect line) is planned, and the long-term monitoring station's range and surrounding areas are systematically traversed. Depending on the agricultural land type, different suggestions are made. For example, for small rice fields in Chishang, walk around the outer edge of the field ridge; for the complex rice fields in Fuli, plan a path that covers a relatively complete range of species during the survey time; for orchards, an alternative route can be chosen if it is not possible to walk around the field.
