Description

Syue Mountain (雪山) in Taiwan is a representative alpine ecosystem with rich and intact natural resources, making it a critical area for long-term biodiversity monitoring in the context of global climate change. Since 2009, the Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters has conducted integrated long-term surveys in the Syue Mountain area, establishing monitoring plots and transects to collect biological and abiotic data across the alpine ecosystem. This dataset contains species occurrence records from sub-projects 4 through 9 of the integrated research program: Sub-project 4 – Vascular plant flora Sub-project 5 – Bryophyte flora Sub-project 6 – Insect diversity and functional groups Sub-project 7 – Avifauna community and ecology Sub-project 8 – Mammals Sub-project 9 – Fire disturbance and vegetation dynamics

Project Data

The project is titled "Long-term Ecological Survey of Alpine Ecosystems in the Mount Syue Area," commissioned by the Shei-Pa National Park Administration. The core objective is to collect, integrate, and enhance data on biotic and abiotic factors—including plants, insects, birds, mammals, microclimate, and soil—to construct a comprehensive long-term monitoring system. Through standardized monitoring methods, the project explores the mechanisms of community succession and evaluates the potential impacts of global climate change on the alpine ecosystem to provide a scientific basis for national park management and environmental decision-making.

Title
Funding Shei-Pa National Park
Study Area Description The research area is located along the Syue Mountain (Mt. Shei) Main Peak trail within Shei-Pa National Park, spanning an altitudinal gradient from the trailhead (alt. 2,140 m) to the mountain peak (alt. 3,886 m). The landscape is characterized by diverse topography, including glacial remains (Syue Mountain Cirque), the Black Forest (pure Abies kawakamii forest), the burned area near 369 Lodge, and various gravel slopes. Vegetation zones distributed along the elevation include the Upper Oak Forest Zone, Hemlock-Spruce Forest Zone, Fir Forest Zone, and Alpine Vegetation Zone. The climate is defined as alpine heavy humid, with an estimated annual average temperature of 4-6°C and significant winter snow cover.
Design Description This project employs an integrated multidisciplinary survey design to monitor the alpine ecosystem along the Syue Mountain Main Peak trail (alt. 2,140m–3,886m). Sampling is conducted across altitudinal gradients using standardized protocols for different biological groups: - Plants: Botanical data are collected through multiple sub-projects, including vascular plant inventories (permanent plots), seed plant phenology (31 sample lines), vegetation structure analysis (intensive forest plots), and post-fire succession monitoring (81 sample plots near 369 Lodge). - Insects: Bi-monthly surveys using sweeping net (SWP) and litter (LIT) sampling at six fixed sampling sites across four altitudinal zones. - Birds: Density monitoring via the variable circular-plot method at 30 fixed stations, supplemented by bird banding (mist-netting). - Mammals: Multi-method monitoring using Sherman live traps for small mammals, infrared automatic cameras for medium-to-large mammals, and bat detectors/harp traps for chiropterans.
