This study was conducted at C. formosensis forest sample sites at three altitudes including 1,500 m, 2,000 m and 2,500 m in Guanwu, Dasyueshan and Alishan.

- fine roots from the 10-20 cm layer of the soil were collected by tracing them from the stem of the plant.
- Samples were placed in polyethylene bags to the laboratory.
