Descripción

This dataset consists of vegetation surveys conducted in Yushan National Park, Taiwan, including the eastern section (Nan-an to Dafen, 300–2,000 m a.s.l.) and the western Nansi Forest Road. The surveys cover various habitat types such as evergreen broadleaf forests, mixed conifer–broadleaf forests, coniferous forests, and grasslands. Data include vegetation composition, dominant species and species diversity. The dataset does not directly contain records of Formosan black bears, but survey plots were categorized as “hotspot” or “non-hotspot” areas of bear activity based on long-term research, which can be identified through the eventID. This dataset provides fundamental information on vegetation distribution and habitat characteristics in Yushan National Park, supporting ecological studies, vegetation monitoring, and conservation management.

Métodos de muestreo

Vegetation survey sites were selected based on GPS tracking data from 15 radio-collared Formosan black bears (Ursus thibetanus formosanus). Bear movement data were analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and k-means cluster analysis to delineate four major activity hotspots. Sampling plots were established both within hotspots (areas of high bear activity) and outside hotspots (control areas with lower activity) to compare vegetation composition. Within each plot, vegetation structure, dominant species, and community composition were documented following standard phytosociological methods.

Área de Estudio The study was conducted in Yushan National Park, covering both the eastern and western regions. Eastern transect: Batongguan Historic Trail, from Nanan (300 m) to Dafen (1,300 m), passing Walami (1,000 m), Baoyai (1,600 m), up to Duo-Mei-Li Mt. area (~2,000 m). This section spans ~40 km, with habitats ranging from lowland evergreen broadleaf forests to montane coniferous forests and grasslands. Western transect: Nansi Forest Road, consisting of two sections, with vegetation types including evergreen broadleaf forest, mixed conifer-broadleaf forest, coniferous forest, and grasslands.
Control de Calidad Plant species were identified under the supervision of Prof. Yang, with scientific names standardized according to the latest Taiwan Catalogue of Life (TaiCOL). Data cleaning procedures included validation of taxonomic names, checking for consistency in measurements, and ensuring that no special characters were present in data values.

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:

  1. A total of 100 plots were established. Each plot measured 10 m × 25 m (250 m²) and was subdivided into ten 5 m × 5 m (25 m²) subplots. Vegetation was surveyed at two structural levels: Tree layer: All woody plants ≥1.5 m in height and with Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) ≥1 cm were identified and DBH measured. Ground layer: All plants <1.5 m in height and with DBH <1 cm, including saplings, herbs, and ferns, were recorded.
