Description

The Taiwan New Year Bird Count (Taiwan NYBC) is a citizen science project that aims to monitor the status and trends of migratory waterbirds in Taiwan proper and its outlying islands. It was launched by the Taiwan Wild Bird Federatiopn (TWBF), the Wild Bird Society of Taipei (WBST), the Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society (KWBS) and Taiwan Endemic Species Institute(ESRI) in December 2013. The monitoring methods of the Taiwan NYBC follow the basic principles laid out in the more commonly known Christmas Bird Count. Over the course of 23 days from mid-December to early January (with January 1st as a midpoint), volunteer teams choose a 24-hour period to count all the birds within a circular sample area having a radius of three kilometers. Species, abundance, location, date, start time, end time, party size, survey method and weather are all recorded. Survey methods including line transect, counting flocks, area search, amongst others. This data provides valuable information about the distribution and community composition of Taiwan’s wintering avifauna. This has importance for conservation goals along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway as it offers an in depth look at the site usage of a number of migratory bird species. At the national level, findings are shared with government agencies such as Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior. Internationally, the data is shared with Wetlands International for use in the Asian Waterbird Census.

Couverture géographique

The geographic scope of the data covers Taiwan proper and its outlying islands, including the Penghu Archipelago, the Matsu Archipelago, the Kinmen Islands and the Dongsha Islands. Taiwan proper is asubtropical biodiversity-rich mountainous island located at the intersection of East and Southeast Asia. Because the eastern two-thirds of the island is covered by high mountains, most human activity occurs on the flat plains and rolling hills of the western third. Croplands are mainly found in western Taiwan as well as eastern Taiwan's Rift Valley. The total area of cropland in Taiwan was 710,515.15 ha in 2017 (data source: Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan). Of this, about 20.67% was comprised of rice paddy fields (146,857.27 ha; data source: Council of Agriculture, Taiwan).

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Rules for the Taiwan NYBC are based off the basic principles set out in the Christmas Bird Count. Over the course of 23 days (with January 1st serving as a midpoint), volunteer teams choose one 24-hour period to count all the birds within a circle sample area whose radius is three kilometers. Routes within sample areas are provided for teams by the organizers. Teams are composed of at least one leader, at least one person experienced in birdwatching and surveys, and supporting volunteers. Group numbers could range from as few as three to over 100. While doing their count, teams record species name, number of individuals, location of route(s)/observation area, date, start and end time, number of participants, survey methods and weather conditions. Survey methods vary and include line transects, counting flocks, area searches, and others.

Etendue de l'étude The geographic scope of the data covers Taiwan proper and its outlying islands, including the Penghu Archipelago, the Matsu Archipelago, the Kinmen Islands and the Dongsha Islands.
Contrôle qualité The date, time, and location of the survey should be fixed as regularly as possible. Double counting of individual birds should be avoided. Volunteers are also encouraged to do their best to record all species and individuals when doing their surveys in order to show the complete abundance of birds in a plot circle.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. 1. Organizers plan the survey period and mascot for the year's count. 2. Teams are created by site leaders to prepare for the Taiwan NYBC. Actions include designing site circles, recruiting volunteers, selecting survey dates, and assigning tasks within a specified range. Team leaders decide the survey methods used and surveys routes to use within their provided plot circles. They then report the survey results to the organizers. 3.Organizers compile and summarize survey results submitted by team leaders.
