Western Ghats is a unique mountain ecosystem comprised of different tropical forest and grassland landscapes that harbour high levels of biological diversity and endemism. Scientists from both the French Institute of Pondicherry and the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda have studied this global hotspot of biodiversity for decades, resulting in the collection of important data organized in as-yet inaccessible databases. The project team has curated and digitized herbarium specimens covering the whole of Western Ghats, producing a valuable asset for conservation science that serves as a precedent for other institutions to digitize and publish open data from their natural history collections.

The herbarium is a collection of botanical observations associated with sample collection and conservation. It has not been built with a precise sampling method but results instead of various methods put together.

Method step description:
- Data capture: Manually typing the information from the herbarium sheets.
- Image digitization: each sheet was scanned.
- Geographical coordinates and inaccuracy in meters produced by "Geolocate".
- Data curation using Excel and OpenRefine.
- Identification validated by the Gbif Backbone Taxonomy.
- Dataset standardized and checked with the tool "Data Validator" of GBIF before publishing.
