Description
Sciaenidae is one of the most important coastal fisheries in Taiwan both in production and economic value. It's also significant as the main targeted diet by Chinese white dolphins especially genus Johnius primarily in central-western Taiwan. However, there are no specific data on the locality abundance distribution for this genus in Taiwan. Thus, we describe a dataset of the genus Johnius occurrences around the western coast of Taiwan. This data collection was a combination of data by Shao et al., (2012), and Liou (2016) and several series of collections from 2009-2020 surrounding the western coast of Taiwan waters data. All fish specimens collected from trawling were brought back to the lab for identification, individual number count, and body weight measurement. This data has been published through TaiBIF (http://taibif.tw) and GBIF (https://www.gbif.org). This dataset contains six Johnius species and 2,122 records, making it the comprehensive Johnius fish fauna and their temporal and spatial distributional data on the coastal habitat in Taiwan.

Couverture géographique
We downloaded the Landsat8 satellite image on 18 September 2022 and drew the investigation scope by using ArcGIS 10.7 software. Our survey covered almost all areas of Taiwan island, such as estuary, intertidal, and riverine structures.

Couverture taxonomique
Six species of Johnius were recorded in the dataset, which is including Bearded croaker, Johnius amblycephalus, Belanger's croaker, Johnius belangerii, Sharpnose hammer croaker, Johnius borneensis, croaker, Johnius distinctus, Taiwan's croaker, Johnius taiwanensis, and trewavas croaker, Johnius trewavasae. Most of the Johnius collections in the dataset were of J. belangerii, J. distinctus, and J. taiwanensis (81.8% and 18.2%). Only one sole specimen of the Johnius species, Johnius grypotus, described Yu and Shen's (1989) occurrences in Keelung, northern Taiwan which were resurrected by Sasaki (1990).

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
The sampling design for collecting bottom trawl harvest from coastal waters around Taiwan. The locality names (or nearest fishing harbors) and water depths in each region were outlined below: Southwestern Taiwan (Xingda Harbor: 30-100 m; Kaohsiung Harbor: 100-300 m; Donggang: 100-300 m; Fenggang: 100-300 m; sandy and muddy bottoms); and Western Taiwan (Hsinchu: 6070 m; Miaoli: 30-50 m; Changhua: 10-40 m; all sandy bottoms) (Shao et al., 2012). Several series of extensive monthly samples were collected and analyzed from several localities starting in 2009, followed by Miaoli fish landing ports in north-western Taiwan waters between March 2019 and March 2020. The fresh fish samples were used as identification species by morphological characters with specimen vouchers.
Etendue de l'étude | We collect occurrences reports of all Johnius sample from around the western coasts of Taiwan, which is included in the dataset. |
---|---|
Contrôle qualité | All the scientific names of fish samples were validated by the updated fish checklist in Taiwan Fish Database before it is added to the database. Afterward, the data were validated again by matching them against FishBase, Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences, Chao et al., (2019), and Hanafi et al., (2023) for further verification. The latitude and longitude of trawling routes were plotted on Google Maps and outliers were detected. |
Description des étapes de la méthode:
- Data collection. The integration of Johnius distributional data start from February 2000 to November 2003 (Shao et al. 2012), 2016 (Liou 2016), and in Miaoli from March 2019 to March 2020 has been collected in the surrounding coastal waters of Taiwan. There 2,122 Johnius samples were obtained and derived either by gill nets, trawling, or fish market which were used to investigate their spatial distribution in Taiwanese waters. After the sample collections, all the specimens were identified to the species level (Chao et al., 2019; Hanafi et al., 2023) and their weight was measured.
- Open data preparation: We converted the occurrence data into Darwin Core Archive standard in Google Sheets, an online spreadsheet tool, using the Darwin Core Archive Assistant Add-on (Salim and Saraiva, 2020). The data is then opened on the IPT and GBIF for the public to access.
