Descripción

A comprehensive ecological monitoring dataset covering 26 rivers (24 centrally-managed rivers and 2 cross-municipal rivers) in Taiwan, conducted through 250 fixed monitoring stations. The surveys are performed in 3-year cycles as part of the "River Situation Investigation and Conservation Measures Improvement Plan (中央管流域整體改善與調適計畫)."

Registros

Fish: Electrofishing was the primary method used. The investigators would proceed from downstream to upstream. Fish traps with meat bait were used when necessary. Shrimp and crab: Shrimp traps with food bait were used and left overnight before collection. Direct observation was used in tidal flat environments, while stone turning was used in mountainous areas. Aquatic insects: The fixed-area sampling method was mainly used. A Surber net was used to disturb the substrate within a 50 cm x 50 cm grid, allowing aquatic insects to flow into the net with the current. Dip nets were used in environments unsuitable for the Surber net, such as those with excessive water depth, estuaries, lentic water (deep pools), or muddy substrates.

Área de Estudio The survey aims to cover 250 aquatic ecological sampling stations in all major water systems in the main Taiwan island.
Control de Calidad Time, location, sampling methods used, and collected organisms were recorded for each survey. Identification and classification of aquatic insects were conducted by professionals. All species identified , including those that could not be identified to the species level , were given a taxonConceptID. Chinese and scientific names of species were referenced from existing databases (mainly TaiCOL - Catalogue of Life Taiwan, and TBN - Taiwan Biodiversity Network), and notes were given in the taxonRemarks column.

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:

  1. Sampling Station Establishment: Sampling stations were established in the selected water systems based on the research objectives and scope. Considerations included whether the stations were previous situational survey stations, hydrological and water quality monitoring stations, the similarity of habitat types, and accessibility for investigators.
  2. Sample Collection: Fish, shrimp, crabs, and aquatic insect samples were collected using methods such as electrofishing, shrimp trapping, and fixed-area sampling.
  3. Sample Identification and Classification: Collected samples were identified, classified, and relevant information recorded.
