Descrição
The survey data were obtained from a beam trawl survey targeting benthic fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods conducted in August 2024 by the R/V New Ocean Researcher III. All samples were collected using a beam trawl with a width of 6 m, a body length of 8 m, a body mesh size of 4.5 cm, and a cod-end mesh size of 2.5 cm. Each trawling operation was carried out at a towing speed of approximately 1.5 knots for 30 minutes. All sampling stations were located in the Penghu Channel, Taiwan. The collected specimens were sorted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level in the laboratory.

| Financiamento | This dataset was funded by the Marine National Park Headquarters and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Taiwan. |
| Descrição da Área de Estudo | The project aims to investigate the benthic ecology of the eastern waters off the South Penghu Marine National Park. The sampling sites are located in the offshore area east of Dongji Island, north of the Marine Existing Use Area II (MEUA II) of Taijiang National Park, within the coordinate range of approximately 119.735°E–119.910°E and 23.220°N–23.325°N. The surveyed area is currently not designated as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Taiwan. |
| Descrição do Design | The purpose of this study was to investigate the benthic ecology and species composition of demersal fishes, shrimps, crabs, and cephalopods in the Penghu Channel, Taiwan. Sampling was conducted at three offshore stations (PC4a, PC4b, and PC5a) in August 2024. The sampling design aimed to document the diversity and structure of bottom-associated fauna within the channel, which connects the East China Sea and the South China Sea and is characterized by strong currents. A standardized beam trawl protocol was applied to ensure data consistency and comparability with previous demersal surveys conducted in adjacent areas. Each trawl was towed at approximately 1.5 knots for 30 minutes using a 6-m-wide beam trawl with a body length of 8 m, a 4.5-cm body mesh, and a 2.5-cm cod-end mesh. |
Métodos de Amostragem
The sampling survey was conducted in the Penghu Channel, Taiwan, with three designated offshore stations located east of Dongji Island: PC4a (119.8170°E, 23.2341°N), PC4b (119.8170°E, 23.3208°N), and PC5a (119.7530°E, 23.2500°N). A single research cruise was carried out in August 2024, during which three trawl hauls were conducted, one at each station.
| Área de Estudo | The study was conducted in the Penghu Channel, Taiwan, focusing on the benthic fauna including demersal fishes, shrimps, crabs, and cephalopods. Three offshore sampling stations (PC4a, PC4b, and PC5a) located east of Dongji Island were surveyed during a single research cruise in August 2024. Each station was trawled once using a standardized beam trawl to collect bottom-associated fauna for species composition analysis. |

| Controle de Qualidade | All biological specimens in this study were identified based on morphological characteristics. Identification for each major taxonomic group followed standard taxonomic references to the lowest possible taxonomic level (taxa), including: 1. Fishes: Shen (1993), Nakabo (2013), Froese and Pauly (2024), FishBase website (Shao, 2025). 2. Shrimps: Yu and Chen (1986), Liu and Chung (1986), Dore and Frimodt (1987), Chen and Yu (1993), Chan (1998a, 1998b). 3. Crabs: Takeda (1982), Miyake (1983), Tai et al. (1986), Huang and Yu (1997), Ng (1998), Chan et al. (2009), Yang et al. (2012), Huang and Shih (2021). 4. Cephalopods: Okutani (2005), Lu and Chung (2017). All data were recorded in written field sheets and subsequently verified to ensure accuracy and consistency. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Sampling: A beam trawl survey was conducted at three offshore stations (PC4a, PC4b, and PC5a) within the Penghu Channel, Taiwan, during a research cruise in August 2024. Each trawl was towed for 30 minutes at a speed of approximately 1.5 knots using a 6-meter-wide beam trawl with a body mesh size of 4.5 cm and a cod-end mesh size of 2.5 cm.
- Specimen processing: After retrieval, the catch from each haul was roughly sorted on board by major taxonomic groups, and all specimens were immediately frozen at −20 °C for preservation.
- Laboratory identification: In the laboratory, specimens were thawed, sorted, and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level based on morphological characteristics using standard taxonomic references.
- Data recording and verification: All species identification results and abundance data were recorded on paper sheets, later digitized into spreadsheets, and cross-checked to ensure accuracy and consistency before inclusion in this dataset.
